For the next twenty years or more my great great grandfather, in the guise of his alter ego John Page, would be resident in Southampton extending his earnings as an artist by taking on a ‘Temperance Tavern’ in Above Bar Street, the city’s long High Street, just north of the Bargate. He was still officially married to Amelia but appears to have abandoned her and their children – or, just as likely, she had shown him the door – before she left for America.
